Decoration with wooden slats
L’effetto dogato è un tipo di decorazione grazie alla quale puoi trasformare le superfici lisce dei tuoi mobili in veri e propri “pannelli dogati”, tipici dell’arredamento di campagna. Era da tempo che pensavo a come sostituire le ceste porta giochi che avevo posizionato sotto alla panca in soggiorno.
The slats effect is a type of decoration through which you can relook the smooth surfaces of your furniture into real slats panels, typical of country furniture. It was a long time I have been thinking about how to replace the game baskets that I had placed under the bench in the living room.
Le ceste contenevano i giochi delle bambine e finché loro erano piccole bastavano, ma si sa, più i bimbi crescono, più i giochi aumentano e avevo bisogno di avere un contenitore più capiente. L’idea mi venne una sera, un cassettone poteva fare al caso mio, ma doveva essere particolare e bello da vedere. Di seguito troverai una spiegazione dettagliata di come l’ho realizzato! Sono partita da un’asse di abete naturale e con righello e matita ho tracciato le doghe che avrei voluto come decorazione.
The game baskets had the girls’ game inside and they were enough as long as the girls were little, but we all know that the more children grow up the more games increase and I needed a larger box. One night I had a new idea, a big drawer could have been my solution but it had to be special and nice to see. Below you will find a detailed description of how I created it! I began with a fir natural plank and with a ruler and a pencil I traced the slats that I would have liked as a decoration.
Aiutandomi con un taglierino ho creato i ”solchi” nel legno. Poi sono passata alla definizione delle gamme cromatiche da utilizzare per la finitura. Questo cassettone, rimane diametralmente opposto al mio ingresso, te lo ricordi? Volevo che questi due ambienti risultassero in qualche modo “legati tra loro” quindi ho ripreso il colore assenzio della linea di pitture laChalk, con il quale avevo dipinto il portone, e il bianco dei muri. Poi, ho aggiunto il color fumo, presente in soggiorno, dove appunto avrei inserito questo contenitore. Ho iniziato con la base e ho dipinto tutta la superficie lasciando il colore abbondante, cioè non troppo “tirato”.
With a cutter, I created the grooves in the wood. After that, I defined the colour ranges that I would have used for finishing. This big drawer stays diametrically in the opposite side of my home entrance, do you remember it? I woul have liked two environments to be somehow “tied up to each other” so I decided to use “Assenzio” color of the laChalk paint, because with that I had painted the main door and the white walls. Then, I used even “Fumo” color that was already present in the living room, where I would have arranged the big drawer. I began applying a base and I painted the whole surface coloring abundantly.
Prima che la pittura asciugasse, ho passato sull’intera asse l’apposita “spatola effetto legno” e ho ricreato, appunto, le venature che non avevo, dato che ero partita da una base completamente liscia. Quello che volevo ottenere era una decorazione con doghe di colore diverso e con l’effetto decapato chiaro/scuro. Ho lasciato asciugare e successivamente ho passato su tutta la superficie la paraffina, questo per agevolare il processo di decapatura che avrei fatto dopo l’applicazione del secondo colore a contrasto.
Before the paint dried, I passed on the entire plank with the appropriate “wood effect spatula”. I recreated exactely wood veins, that I didn’t have since I started from a completely smooth base. What I wanted to get was a decoration with slats of diffrent colours and with the pickled effect. I waited for drying, then I stretched the paraffin all over the surface, only to make it easier the pickling process that I would have done after applying the second contrasting colour.
Lo step successivo è stato quello di dipingere le doghe, coprendo la paraffina, con le tre tonalità scelte in precedenza: burro, assenzio e fumo. Questo tipo di pittura è di facile utilizzo ed è molto bella da stendere. Ha un effetto gessoso e una volta asciutta, al tatto rimane vellutata.
The next step was to paint the slats, covering the paraffin with the three shades chosen before: Burro, Assenzio and Fumo. This kind of painting is easy to use and lovely to stretch. It has a chalky effect and when dried it remains velvety to the touch.
Dopo i tempi di asciugatura ho passato energicamente la carta vetrata a grana grossa sull’ intera base, facendo emergere il color fumo dai vari colori applicati. Alla vista sembrano doghe vere, nessuno direbbe che le venature sono state ricreate a mano!
After the drying times I vigorously passed the coarse sandpaper over the whole surface bringing out the smoke colour from the others colours applied. Looking at them they seem to be real slats, no one would say that the veins are handmade!
Infine ho inserito due maniglie in ferro e ho inchiodato l’asse alla base del cassettone costruita in precedenza! Ora tutti i giochi sono sistemati in modo molto ordinato e le mie bambine sono felici di avere tutto a portata di mano! L’effetto finale a me piace tantissimo! At the end, I applied two iron handles and I fixed the plank to the base of the big drawer previously constructed! Now the games are placed in order and my little girls are happy to have all at their fingertips! I love so much the final vision!
